The UK has introduced the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system to simplify the travel process for eligible visitors. If you are traveling to the UK for tourism, business, or transit, applying for an ETA is essential for smooth entry.
The ETA is an online authorization that allows travellers from eligible countries to enter the UK without a visa for short stays (up to six months). It helps speed up entry, making the process more efficient.
Whether you’re eligible for an ETA depends on:
- Your nationality: Travelers from specific countries can apply for an ETA.
- The date you travel: The UK is rolling out the ETA requirement in phases, with different dates for when it applies to citizens of different countries.
Nationals from certain countries, including most of the Commonwealth nations and others, can apply for an ETA now. Citizens from many countries, such as the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as some others, are eligible to apply immediately.
From 5 March 2025, nationals of many EU countries and other European territories will also be eligible to apply for an ETA. These travellers can use their ETA to travel to the UK from 2 April 2025.
Not everyone needs an ETA. If you have British citizenship, a valid visa, or meet other specific criteria, you do not need to apply. Certain transit travellers and children on specific school trips are also exempt.
With an approved ETA, the length of your stay in the UK depends on the purpose of your visit:
- Stay for up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business, or short-term study.
- Stay for up to 3 months under the Creative Worker visa concession or for a permitted paid engagement.
If you’re coming for another purpose, check if you need a visa instead.
It costs £10 for each person to apply for an ETA. Everyone traveling, including babies and children, needs to apply for their own ETA, even if you are applying on behalf of someone else.
It usually takes up to 3 working days to receive a decision n your ETA application. Most applicants receive a decision much quicker, but in some cases, it may take longer.
For citizens of countries that can apply now, you should apply at least 48 hours before your departure. For citizens of countries eligible from 5 March 2025, you should apply at least a week before your travel dateto ensure sufficient processing time.
