For British nationals travelling to the UK, the documents required will depend on the type of British nationality you hold and whether you have the right of abode in the UK.
British citizens
British citizens have the right of abode in the UK and do not need a visa or ETA to enter.
The simplest option is to travel using a valid British passport. British citizens who also hold another nationality can generally use their British passport, an Irish passport, or a foreign passport together with a valid certificate of entitlement to the right of abode. You cannot have a British passport and a certificate of entitlement.
New rules from February 2026
There was an important change to certificates of entitlement to the right of abode on 26 February 2026.
Previously, a certificate of entitlement was normally issued as a physical sticker (vignette) in a foreign passport. Since 26 February 2026, new certificates are issued digitally and are held through the individual’s UKVI account.
The change does not affect the underlying right of abode. It changes how that right is evidenced. A digital certificate can be used to demonstrate the right to enter and live in the UK and, where relevant, to prove the right to work or rent.
The digital certificate is also intended to make the process simpler when a passport expires. Rather than applying for a new certificate each time, the holder can update their UKVI account with details of their new passport. The update is free. However, the passport being used for travel must be linked to the digital certificate.
Anyone relying on a certificate of entitlement should therefore check their UKVI account and passport details before travelling.
Other forms of British nationality
It is important to remember that not every British national is a British citizen.
British Nationals (Overseas), British Overseas citizens, British subjects and British protected persons have different immigration rights. For example, a BNO passport does not, by itself, give the holder an unrestricted right to live and work in the UK.
The correct travel document will therefore depend on the individual’s particular nationality and immigration status.
Before you travel
Before travelling to the UK, check:
- what type of British nationality you hold;
- whether you have the right of abode;
- which passport you intend to use;
- whether your UKVI account is linked to your current passport, where relevant; and
- whether any digital immigration status or certificate needs to be updated.
For most British citizens, travelling with a valid British passport is the simplest option. However, if you hold another form of British nationality, have dual nationality or are relying on a certificate of entitlement, it is advisable to check your situation before travelling.
